天氣漸漸涼爽，是否感受到秋天的腳步呢？講到秋收就讓我想起一篇故事：The Grasshopper and the Ant，凡舉繪本、讀本到課本閱讀篇都必讀到這一篇，要怎麼收穫就怎麼努力的故事。享樂主義的蚱蜢不明白為何螞蟻總是忙個不停，最後在一個寒冷的冬天，好吃懶做的蚱蜢總算體驗到勤勞工作好過冬的教訓。每次故事演唱到螞蟻辛勤地搬運食物畫面就順道來一段《Ants Marching Song》 ，俏皮有趣的歌曲內容加上押韻文字，學生立馬朗朗上口，如：The ants go marching one by one. The little one started to such its thumb. / The ants go marching two by two. The little one started to tie its shoes. The ants go marching three by three. The little one started to climb a tree.

 

整首歌曲一直唱到 The ants go marching ten by ten. 透過螞蟻和蚱蜢的對話，我們複習了重複出現的句型文法，如： There isn’t any food in winter, so I must prepare now. / It’s summer now and there’s lots of food. 以及 Next year you mustn’t be lazy and you must prepare for winter. 課堂活動中的手動操作為好吃好玩的 ants on the log. 同時，我們利用剩下來的芹菜介紹植物吸水的實驗以及毛細現象。

所需的材料：葡萄乾、芹菜、 花生醬或優格

 

做法很簡單， 將芹菜切段， 抹上花生醬或是優格替代， 將一顆顆的葡萄乾當成螞蟻， 排列裝飾再塗上花生醬的芹菜， 美味可口的 ants on the log 就成功囉！

 

製作過程中可以複習之前課堂中介紹過的 There is / There are 句型: There are two ants on the log. 以及連綴動詞（ linking verb）後接形容詞，如: The celery tastes crunchy and juicy with a bitter taste. The peanut butter tastes sweet.

 

 How plants drink water

 

芹菜是一個很好用來觀察植物吸水的材料， 觀察植物蒸散作用除了將白色的花放入色素顏料水中觀察外， 芹菜也能同時運用在認識木質部的毛細現象（capillary phenomenon）

 

所需的材料：帶有葉子的芹菜、 食用色素、 數個量杯

 

首先， 介紹植物 root / seed / stem/ leaf以及芹菜 leaves of celery stalk / celery stalk ， 將食用色素倒入裝有水的量杯， 滴入食用色素數滴， 切一段芹菜葉柄， 切記在水中切取， 才可避免疏水的管道中形成氣泡而中斷了水分的運送， 再將帶有芹菜葉的葉柄基部放置量杯， 觀察植物如何吸收水分。觀察實驗前可以先與學生預測（make a prediction）芹菜的變色所需時間、芹菜的變化。其後，放置不同長短的芹菜於不同量杯，觀察需多久的時間能將葉脈染色， 透過這項實驗觀察，植物的根部能將水傳輸至葉子，水分能穿透葉子蒸發，染過色的葉緣是葉脈內殘留下來的色素。Plants absorb water through their roots through a process called transpiration. The water travels up tubes in the stems to all parts of the plants. When food coloring is added to the water, it travels with the water into the celery’s stem and then into the leaves. 此外， 學生可藉由觀察芹菜的根部看將染色後較明顯的 xylem.（木質部）。

 

實驗的延伸，可以試著將芹菜底部分切成有如兩根吸管， 分別放置在裝有不同顏色的量杯，觀察其變化。另外學生可以觀察到木質部的毛細現象，根據這個原理可做延伸活動是製作彩虹橋，方法很簡單，分別準備七個杯子，單數號杯子分別到入紅、黃、藍、紅顏料，雙數號杯子為清水杯，杯子與杯子放置廚房紙巾，靜置一段時間觀察其變化！
