一年一度最受學生歡迎的萬聖節來囉！今天我們就來上《Go away, Big Green Monster》，故事內容隨著頁面的變化，分別介紹怪物的特徵，故事中的怪物臉部雛形也隨著頁面逐漸浮現。透過故事的描述，學生們可以認識到數量單位、大小、顏色等形容詞先後排列順序，以及形容詞修飾名詞的用法。如：Big Green Monster has two big yellow eyes, a long bluish-greenish nose…等，除了動手操作課程能讓學生回味十足外，課後最牢記的一句話是故事最後的一句：Go away, Big Green Monster. And don’t come back until I say so! 是一本深受大小學生共鳴又應景的繪本。

 

此次我想與大家分享的動手操作篇是製作可食用的 Big Green Monster 棒棒糖，觀察微波加熱的棉花糖如何物理變化，以及漂浮變形蟲。

 

 Big Green Monster Lollipop

 

 所需的材料：棉花糖 marshmallow、食用色素 food coloring（若不混色可以使用抹茶粉替代）、玉米片 cereal 、葡萄乾 raisins 以及冰棒棍或免洗竹筷。課堂內，介紹混色「Yellow and blue make green.」、「Blue and red make purple.」，讓學生探索不同顏色的混色。接著將三顆棉花糖微波加熱約十秒，並且倒入 1~2 滴預先調和好的食用色素拌勻，並且和上玉米片，接著將拌好的雛形放置空盤整形並且等待冷卻， 裝飾兩顆葡萄乾做為怪獸眼睛，Big Green Monster Lollipop 就大功告成囉！

 

製作的過程裡，學生可以學習到如何形容物體，如：This is my big purple monster with two big brown eyes. / My monster has two big brown eyes.；進階班的學生可做比較級/最高級以及所有格代名詞練習，如：”My monster is bigger than yours. Sidney’s monster is the biggest of all.”；同時，也可以觀察棉花糖加熱後的變化 “The microwave makes the water molecules vibrate very quickly—which makes the water heat up. The hot water warms the sugar, which softens a little. The hot water also warms the air bubbles.” 並結合關係子句的練習，如：The marshmallow is soft. But the marshmallow which had been heated in the microwave became gooey.

At first, it expands, because it is full of air, and the air expands But it is porous, so the air eventually escapes, and then the marshmallow just melts and gets all gooey because sugar has a very low melting point. Also, marshmallows have gelatin, which also melts easily.

 

 漂浮變形蟲

 

萬聖節除了介紹怪物之外，最刺激的部分莫過於凡是可怕的東西都會在這一天出現吧！我的小孩曾在小學課堂裡操作過一項實驗，就是將白板筆書寫在奈米磁磚上，輕輕地滑入水中，磁磚上的文字就能飄浮在水裡! 運用白板筆成分樹脂將墨水凝固形成黏膜，漂浮至水的表面。

 

 所需的材料：酯類墨水白板筆、磁磚或鏡面、一盆水

 

在鏡面上畫出不同型態超出想像的蟲，小心輕滑入水中，看看自己繪製的蟲會變成什麼樣子呢？看著水裡漂浮的蟲，學生們可練習 “Look at my wriggly amoeba/ worm. Look at my slimy and wriggly worm. / Look at my long greenish worm.”
